About

Renascent Bookbindery was founded by Tim James as a place where visitors can learn about the history of bookbinding and printing by interacting with the tools, and seeing the craft at work .

After a 30 year career as a bookbinder in San Francisco’s Mission District, Tim James traveled the east coast looking for a city with a lively downtown, and an appreciation of its industrial heritage. He settled in Troy, NY, whose 19th century brick buildings, and robust history of industry and bookbinding suited the vision perfectly. He began shipping in his vast collection of machines, equipment, artwork, and historical artifacts, setting up a fully operational 19th century bookbindery.

Visitors can expect to take a hands-on tour of how the processes of bookbinding and printing evolved alongside industry, and experience a craft in action. One of the largest collections of bookbinding literature and artifacts will become available for viewing in the not too distant future.
